Amamelia is the brainchild of Amelia Berry, a versatile award-winning musician and songwriter from Aotearoa New Zealand based in Naarm Melbourne. Her musical style blends the energetic breaks of Jungle and Drum & Bass with a sugary synthetic pop sensibility.
Amelia's journey as Amamelia began with humble beginnings in 2019 when she quietly released a breakbeat reimagining of Savage's 2005 single 'Swing' on Bandcamp. Her sonically ambitious debut album 'WOW!' soon followed on the independent record label Sunreturn, solidifying Amelia's position as one to watch in the NZ music scene.
In 2022, Amamelia released her highly anticipated second album, 'Bananamelia!'. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Cornelius, Soichi Terada and YMO, the album invited listeners into a captivating sonic universe of Amelia's own creation.
Amameilia also has a wide discography of remixes that she has collaborated on. Her album 'WOW! The 2021 Remixes,' was a project that saw her community of fellow musicians remix and rework her album. She has also remixed artists including Imugi 이무기, Summer Thieves, Neil MacLeod, Grecco Romank and Baby Zionov.
Amamelia won Te Manu Taki Tāhiko o te Tau | Best Electronic Artist at the Aotearoa Music Awards in 2024, was shortlisted for the Best Independent Debut award at the prestigious Taite Music Prize in 2021, and was honored with the Favourite Solo Act Award at the inaugural 2021 Student Radio Network Awards. Her standalone single 'Love Is Useless' featuring Junny became a chart-topper, dominating Radioscope's Alt Airplay chart and held the #1 spot on the Student Radio Network Top 10 for two consecutive weeks in 2022.
Beyond her work as Amamelia, Amelia Berry is a multifaceted artist involved in various musical projects. She creates ambient soundscapes under the moniker Old Chips, plays in the queerbo pop-punk band Babyteeth, is one half of happy hardcore project Van Staden & Böhm, explores electronica as the Forbin Project, and has a collaborative dungeon synth project Gayblade with Baby Zionov, plus many more creative outlets.
