Performing under the solo moniker Motte, Anita Clark primarily uses violin, sampled sound/field recordings, synthesizer and voice to create richly textured sound beds to convey otherworldly landscapes and preternatural impressions.

Anita Clark is a talented multi-instrumentalist, who was raised in Ōtautahi Christchurch, and is now based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Anita started playing the violin at 5 years old, and through her in depth command of the instrument and cross-genre versatility she has recorded and performed with Nadia Reid, Marlon Williams and Lawrence Arabia among many others, and she currently plays with The Phoenix Foundation, Luke Buda, Don McGlashan and The Perms.

In 2015 she started performing and recording solo as Motte, and has released three solo  albums 'Songs For Movies’ (self released/Melted Icecream) 2015, ‘Strange Dreams' (CocoMuse) 2017, Cold + Liquid (BaDaBing!) 2022.

As Bruce Russell describes ‘Cold + Liquid’

“There are beautiful songs, drifting soundscapes, and monstrous head-twisting bouts of discordance that nonetheless remains somehow mellifluous (no matter how murky the water)....This music sits in a zone of conditional beauty, equidistant from the work of Coil, Kate Bush and Danielle Dax”

Anita has an extensive list of commissions for music for film, theatre, movement and dance, notably producing work for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the NZ Dance Company, Movement of the Human (MOTH), Movement Art Practice (MAP) and COLOSSAL.

Her works have been performed at various festivals including the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Lyttelton Arts Festival and the Wellington Fringe Festival.

Anita’s first short film soundtrack for ‘Shadows’ directed by Eugene Dyson was premiered at Cannes Film Festival 2019, and her feature length score for NZ documentary ‘Building Bridges - Bill Youren’s Vision Of Peace’ by John Chrisstoffels and Alexandra Porter  was awarded 'Outstanding Excellence for Original Score’ from Docs Without Borders Film Festival and was featured in the NZ Film Festival 2023.
